Behaviour Management at North Arm State School

 

The community of North Arm State School is committed to learning, respect and optimism through a secure, supportive and cooperative environment, which recognises and accepts individual differences, where students can be happy and where optimal learning can take place.

A major part of the teacher’s role is to ensure that children will learn and develop within their school environment without disruptive behaviour hindering their success and enjoyment of learning.  It is also expected that students will respect the teachers’ fundamental right to teach without disruptive behaviours hindering his/her success and enjoyment of teaching.

We also acknowledge that if students are to become productive members of society, teachers must help them to develop responsibility for their actions by both teaching explicitly and practising problem solving skills.

The establishment of good discipline in our school depends upon both school personnel and parents working towards the same goals and insisting on acceptable standards of behaviour being maintained for the enhanced outcomes of our students and our school. 

All areas of North Arm State School are learning and teaching environments.  We consider behaviour management to be an opportunity for valuable social learning as well as a means of maximising the success of academic education programs.

Our Responsible Behaviour Plan outlines our system for facilitating positive behaviours, preventing problem behaviour and responding to unacceptable behaviours.  Through our school plan shared expectations for student behaviour are plain to everyone, assisting North Arm to create and maintain a positive and productive learning and teaching environment, where ALL school community members have clear and consistent expectations and understandings of their role in the educational process. 

Positive relationships and positive interactions flourish in a positive climate. The hall-mark of a positive climate is mutual respect. At North Arm State School the common language of ‘You Can Do It’- Program Achieve will be used to convey expectations around behaviours we strive for.

                         

Parents and the school staff have a joint responsibility to encourage children to develop positive self-esteem, including:

·         Creating an environment that fosters the development of trust.

·         Providing positive models and images. 

·         Valuing, recognising and rewarding

·         Children need to feel that they have choices, but understand the responsibilities and consequence of making a particular choice.

·         Children need clear and consistent boundaries to avoid confusion.

·         Children need consistent care from people they know.

·         Children need to have feelings of trust that their basic needs will be met.

·         Children need to be given respect so that they can develop self-respect.

·         Children need support and care as they learn to deal with their feelings.

 

Essential to the development of a common set of ideas, values and attitudes is a common framework.  At the heart of any common framework lies a common language, easy to use, understood by all and used on a daily basis in as many settings as possible.

The language of the ‘You Can Do It’- Program Achieve is positive in its orientation, active in its meaning and easily understood by all.  It is centred on the following terms:

  • Getting along – (Playing by the Rules, Thinking First, Being tolerant of others)
  • Organisation – (Planning my time, Setting goals)
  • Persistence – (Working tough, Giving effort, I can Do It!)
  • Confidence – (Being independent, Taking risks, Accepting myself)
  • Resilience – (Bouncing back)

What can I do if I believe that my child is being bullied?

The National Centre Against Bullying has also developed a resource entitled 'Bullying Hurts' which provides both students and parents with practical advice.  Furrther resources can be found at the National Centre Against Bullying Website.
